How to Get Your Small Business Found in ChatGPT and Google AI Search

More customers are skipping the list of blue links and asking AI tools directly: “Who's a good HVAC company near Gurnee?” or “Best tacos in Waukegan?” Google's AI answers, ChatGPT, and Gemini pull together a short answer and name a few businesses. If yours isn't one of them, that customer may never see your website.
There's no secret trick to this, and anyone promising guaranteed AI rankings is overselling. But there are clear foundations that make it much easier for these tools to understand and recommend your business.

1. Make your Google Business Profile complete and accurate

AI answers lean heavily on Google Business Profile data. Fill out every field: categories, services, service areas, hours, photos, and a real description. Keep it updated.

2. Keep your name, address, and phone consistent everywhere

Your business details should match exactly on your website, Google, Facebook, Yelp, and industry directories. Inconsistent information makes systems less confident about who you are.

3. Add schema markup to your website

Schema markup is behind-the-scenes code that labels your business name, location, phone, services, and service area in a format search engines and AI tools read directly. Most template sites don't include it.

4. Answer real customer questions on your site

A clear FAQ section and service pages that answer questions like “How much does it cost?”, “Do you serve Kenosha?”, and “How fast can you come out?” give AI tools specific answers to quote.

5. Be specific and local

Name the towns you serve, the specific services you offer, and what makes you different. Generic copy gives AI nothing to work with.

6. Earn and respond to reviews

Recent, detailed reviews, and your thoughtful responses to them, are strong trust signals for both people and AI systems.

7. Make sure your site is technically sound

A fast, secure (HTTPS), mobile-friendly site that search engines can crawl is the baseline. Broken pages, missing SSL, or accidentally blocked crawlers can keep you out entirely.
