Things every small business website needs

Your Website Has 5 Seconds. Here's What It Needs to Say.

When someone in Waukegan, Gurnee, or Kenosha searches for a roofer, a restaurant, or a mechanic, they don't read your website. They scan it. In about five seconds they decide whether to call you or hit the back button and try the next result.
Most small business sites lose that visitor for the same few reasons.

1. Nobody can tell what you do.

“Welcome to our website” isn't a headline. Your top line should say what you do and where: “Roof Repair & Replacement in Lake County, IL.” A visitor should know they're in the right place before they scroll.

2. The phone number is hard to find.

Most local searches happen on a phone. If someone has to scroll to the footer to call you, many won't. Put a tap-to-call button at the top of every page.

3. It looks like everyone else.

This one is new. AI design tools have made it easy to produce a flyer or website in minutes, and a lot of businesses now use the same templates, stock photos, and polished-but-generic wording. When five competitors look alike, customers stop seeing any of them. I call this the sameness problem. Your marketing should look like your business: your crew, your food, your shop, your town.

4. There's no reason to trust you.

Real photos, real reviews, years in business, licenses, service areas. Each of these tells a stranger it's safe to call. A site with none of them makes visitors guess, and visitors who have to guess move on.

5. There's no clear next step.

Every page should end with one action: call, book, get a quote, or order. One clear button beats five competing links.

Quick self-check

Open your site on your phone and ask:
  • Can I tell what this business does in five seconds?
  • Can I call with one tap?
  • Does it look like this business, or could it be anyone's?
  • Is there proof people trust them?
  • Is the next step obvious?
If you answered “no” to two or more, your website is probably costing you calls.
